Rhetorical Analysis to Defend Mental Health in Schools Act...

Over the last several years, our Nation has encountered significant tragedies. In Colorado, our communities have endured several mass shootings, historic floods, and devastating fires, which have had an immense impact on our children’s physical and mental well-being. I felt an obligation to take part in supporting laws that would help address the underlying causes of such tragic events. One of those causes I believe is lack of early detection, prevention, and intervention of mental health issues in our society. I feel we should genuinely value the mental health of our children in our society if we want to mend this great Nation. The psychological well-being of our children affects us both directly and indirectly whether we acknowledge this†¦show more content†¦Cases of homicide and school bullying have also increased as a result. In my letter to the Senator Udall, I drew attention to the fact that many students with mental illness drop out of school and revert to drug use to cope with untreated mental illness. I also noted that mental health issues left untreated have led to an increase in juvenile confinements, many of which are attributed to mental health illness of some form. This shows that there is an imperative need to support the ‘Mental Health in Schools Act,’ that was proposed by the Senator Al Franklin. In my letter, I emphasized that here in Colorado, our residents, both children and adults, have coped with stresses caused by the floods and fires, violence within the community and bullying in our schools. Examining the underlying causes behind the massacres that took place at the theatre in Aurora, Columbine High Schools, and Platte Canyon High School, I believe it is time that we start taking seriously this issue of mental health. The proposed Act, seeking to introduce mental health care in our schools, will certainly offer the potential of improved access, detection in the early stages, and better treatment for the ment al health problems found in our children. Spilt is a movie about a man named Kevin who is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) as he has 23 alter identities. He kidnaps three teenage girls and holds them captive in the cell basement of Philadelphia Zoo. The movie plot revolves around Kevin, Dr. Fletcher who is his psychiatrist, and how the girls try to break free. After kidnapping, Kevin’s one of alter identity, Barry, a sketch artist, is shown in Dr. Fletcher’s office. The psychiatrist does take note of his unusual behavior and emergency emails sent by Barry as he seemed very curious but leaves the office soon. The girls notice that Kevin has multiple alters, when they hear a woman’s voice outside the room and call for help. Instead of a woman, they see Kevin†¦show more content†¦The movie shows that Kevin is mentally ill as the story moves from the kidnapping of girls to seeing him inside a psychiatrist office in alter identities. The psychiatrist was aware of the twenty-three alter identities of Kevin. Moreover, his actions made it clear to the audience that character was suffering from a mental illness such that he would be emotional and eager in one alter identity of a nine year old boy to a man controlling his deviant sexual impulses and seemed frustrated with the girls. As seen in alter identity of Dennis, who also has OCD and would command the girls to take off clothes if they got dirty. Some aspects of character’s actions do match up with the DSM-5 description of DID diagnosis. Such as at least two or more distinct alter identities are shown in the character. There is discontinuity in a persons sense of self, it is shown the alter identities that have different attitudes and preferences. Dr. Fletcher observes the signs, she noticed how the alter identity of Barry is unusual and symptoms of distress in social and occupational area, as struggles with his job are highlighted during the session. The first one is objective method which is the use of a multidimensional numerical (statistical) measure. The second way is called self-placement, the individuals appraise their own class according to questioners categories. The third way is reputation method which individuals appraise others’ class according to questioners categories. The fourth way is combined method, Coleman and Rainwater: People who have really made it, people who are doing really well, people who have achieved the middle-class dream, people who have a comfortable life, people who are just getting by, and people who are having a difficult time.
